Little Shop of Horrors Auditions

Sunday 24th March 2019 7pm Ypod Centre Woking

ALL ROLES CAST EXCEPT DENTIST

Please only register to audition for the part of Orin Scrivello D.D.S - Dentist

Woking Youth Theatre is excited to announce its first production will be Little Shop of Horrors at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre Woking 5th - 8th June.

Little Shop of Horrors is a great comedy with some amazing musical numbers and a dark undertone - perfect for a youth theatre. We strongly encourage you to watch the director's cut of the movie (the ending of which follows the stage version more closely).

Auditions are being held 6:30pm Sunday 17th March at The Ypod Centre, Chobham Road, Woking, GU21 6JD.

Principals will be auditioned first for acting and singing followed by a movement audition for all performers; principals and chorus.

  • 6:30pm - acting auditions for principals only
  • 7:30pm - singing auditions for principals and chorus
  • 8:30pm - movement auditions for principals and chorus

If you do not wish to audition for a principal please arrive in plenty of time for a 7:30pm start.

Due to the theatre availability and timing of the launch of Woking Youth Theatre this will be a shorter, more intensive rehearsal period. Performers should be prepared to attend up to three rehearsals a week depending on their role. Rehearsals will most likely be Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

For the early stages of rehearsals, Sundays will be for chorus numbers (which will also include some principals). Principals will need to attend week day evenings to rehearse scenes and principal numbers. A rehearsal schedule will be published shortly.

Please note: to audition for a principal role you must register using the form at the bottom of this page.

You must become a member of Woking Youth Theatre to accept a role in our productions. There will also be a show fee.

Principal Roles

Seymour

Insecure, naive, put-upon florist's clerk hero. He's a sweet and well-meaning little man.

Sings:

  • Skid Row (Downtown)
  • Grow For Me
  • Ya Never Know
  • Closed for Renovations
  • Mushnik and Son
  • Feed Me (Git It)
  • Now (It's Just the Gas)
  • Call Back in the Morning
  • Suddenly Seymour

Auditionees should prepare to sing 'Suddenly Seymour' and read a scene in a New York accent.

Audrey

Secret love of Seymour's life. Simple, loyal, honest. Not well educated and despite being attractive has low self esteem.

Sings:

  • Skid Row (Downtown)
  • Somewhere That's Green
  • Closed for Rennovations
  • Call Back in the Morning
  • Suddenly Seymour

Auditionees should prepare to sing 'Suddenly Seymour' and read a scene in a New York accent.

Mr Mushnik

Seymour and Audrey's boss. Played as middle-aged. A failure of an East Side florist. His accent is more middle class New York than of Eastern Europe. He seldom smiles and is often stressed.

Sings:

  • Ya Never Know
  • Closed for Renovations
  • Mushnik and Son

Auditionees should prepare to sing 'Mushnik and Son' and read a scene in a General American / soft New York accent.

Orin

A tall, dark, handsome dentist with a black leather jacket and sadistic tendencies. Dresses like a greaser but thinks like an insurance salesman and talks like a radio announcer. This part has the potential to steal the show. Good physical actor required.

Sings:

  • Dentist!
  • Now (It's Just the Gas)

Auditionees should prepare to sing 'Dentist' and read a scene in Orin's unique voice.

The Plant

An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado. It has a huge, nasty-looking pod which gains a shark-like aspect when open and snapping at food. The creature is played by a series of four puppets, manipulated by one Puppeteer. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to be involved in theatre but not necessarily as an actor, singer or dancer.

Auditionees will need to take the movement audition only (8:30pm).

Voice of the Plant

Provided by an actor on an offstage microphone. The sound is a cross between Otis Reading, Barry White and Wolfman Jack. Think of The Voice as that of a street-smart, funky, conniving villain – Rhythm and Blues' answer to Richard the Third.

Sings:

  • Feed Me (Git It)
  • Suppertime

Auditionees should prepare to sing 'Feed Me' and read a scene in The Plant's distinctive voice.

Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon

Three cool, sassy female street kids who function as participants in the action and commentators outside it. They're young, hip, smart, and the only people in the whole cast who really know what's going on. They occasionally sing to the audience directly. And when they do, it's often with a 'secret smile' that says: "we know something you don't know".

As these roles sing throughout the musical strong singers required.

Sings:

  • Little Shop of Horrors
  • Skid Row (Downtown)
  • Da-Doo
  • Ya Never Know
  • Dentist!

Auditionees should prepare to sing 'Little Shop of Horrors' and read a scene in a New York accent.

Featured Roles and Chorus

Little Shop of Horrors was written to be played by a small cast but there are opportunities to add chorus to some of the numbers. The action takes place on Skid Row and as such, there's always a Wino hanging around or a smart shopper in a suit.

There are featured roles including:

  • A Voice not unlike God's
  • Wino
  • Customer
  • Radio Announcer
  • Mr Bernstein
  • Mrs Luce
  • Skip Snip
  • Patrick Martin

As our audition time is limited these roles will be cast from the Chorus during rehearsals.

Auditionees will need to take part in the singing (7:30pm) and movement (8:30pm) auditions only.
